¿Qué le indujo a escribir para niños?
Considero que lo que me llevó a escribir es el hecho de que me encanta leer. Recuerdo que desde que tenía tres años de edad me gustaban los libros. Desde pequeña mis padres me leían cuentos y luego, yo les relataba los que yo misma había inventado, poniendo como protagonistas a elementos de la naturaleza y a mis mascotas. Por esas razones, me parece que escribir literatura infantil es algo muy importante y ameno a la vez.
¿Cómo surgió la idea de crear el personaje de Aldo, el principal protagonista de esta novela?
La idea surgió de un modo casual, cuando cumplí siete años. Desde entonces, escribir y dar a conocer esta historia se convirtió en uno de mis sueños. En 1988 recibí de una amiga de mi familia una figurita de cera con forma de unicornio. Me gustó tanto el regalito que en vez de ponerlo en mi pastel de cumpleaños decidí convertirlo en uno más de mis juguetes.
Cierto día de mayo de 1989, empecé a escribir la historia que ahora se conoce como “Aldo, el Joven Rey”. Al principio, sólo fue un cuento corto y con ilustraciones sencillas. El cuento se llamaba: “El León y el Unicornio”. El protagonista de la historia era un unicornio muy parecido a aquella figura de cera que me habían regalado. El cuento trataba acerca de la rivalidad entre el unicornio y un malvado león. La historia se desarrollaba en un bosque como los de las fábulas, donde el único antagonista, el león, era el rey de los animales.
Dejé de escribir e ilustrar mis cuentos por unos meses, pero todo cambió para el tiempo de la Crisis. Se cerraron las escuelas del país al finalizar el Tercer Bimestre de 1989 y se iniciaron unas largas vacaciones, como consecuencia de la inseguridad que se vivía. A pesar de ello, conté con suficiente tiempo para hacer lo que más me gustaba: leer, escribir y dibujar.
¿Qué la motivó a escribir en ese tiempo siendo apenas una niña?
Probablemente me motivó a escribir los complicados sucesos que yo veía a mi alrededor, y parte de lo que ocurrió en aquél tiempo está reflejado en esta historia. Además, yo sentía la necesidad de crear historias diferentes de las viejas fábulas y cuentos de hadas. Quería inventar algo nuevo y escogí como personajes de mis cuentos a mis animales preferidos: gatos, conejos y caballos, pero también participan seres fantásticos, como los unicornios, grifos, dragones, hadas y extraterrestres.
¿Habrá una segunda parte para “Aldo, el Joven Rey”? ¿Nos podría adelantar cómo será?
Como el primer libro ha tenido muy buena acogida por parte del público, habrá una continuación para esta historia, la cual se encuentra actualmente en revisión y esperamos publicarla antes que finalice este año. En la segunda parte habrá más aventuras de Aldo y los personajes ya conocidos, pero también intervendrán nuevos y divertidos personajes. La acción se desarrollará en el transcurso de unos meses y no de veinticuatro años, como en el caso de “Aldo, el Joven Rey”. Ésa será su principal diferencia.
¿Quiénes son sus autores y obras favoritas?
De niña recuerdo que me gustaba leer los cuentos de Rudyard Kipling (autor de El Libro de la Selva); Alicia en el País de las Maravillas (de Lewis Carrol) me fascinaba; y Heidi (de Juana Spiry). De autores panameños, la única obra que me gustaba era Chiquilinga, de Rogelio Sinán.
De adulta, prefiero los siguientes autores:
n Paulo Coelho, quien escribe obras muy inspiradoras. Considero que mi libro favorito es su novela El Alquimista.
n J. K. Rowling quien escribió los libros de Harry, el personaje de ficción más popular de los últimos años.
n J. R. R. Tolkien, autor de la serie de libros El Señor de los Anillos, y a quien, por su gran imaginación se le ha considerado como el Padre de la Fantasía Épica.
n C. S. Lewis (quien fue amigo de Tolkien) y sus siete Crónicas de Narnia.

-What persuade you to write for children?
I love reading, I think that persuade me to write for children. I remember I was three years old since I liked books. When I was a little girl my parents read me short stories and later, I created my own stories to tell to them. My characters were the nature and my pets. For those reasons, I think writing for children is important and enjoyable.
- How did you get the idea to create Aldo, the main character of your novel?
The idea arose by casualty, when I was seven years old. Since then, writing and giving to know this tale have been one of my dreams.
In 1988, I got a birthday gift from a friend of my family, a candle with unicorn’s shape, for my birthday cake, but I didn’t want to light and damage it, so I took it and kept it as a toy.
In May of 1989, I began to write the tale, today known as “Aldo the young king”. At the beginning, it only was a short story with plain drawings, called “The lion and the unicorn”. The main character was a unicorn that resembles my candle unicorn. The story told about the enmity between a good unicorn and a wicked lion that lived in a place similar to fables’ forests with talking animals, and the lion was the ruler of them.
I stop writing for a few months, I had much homework, but something changed by the time of the economical crisis in Panama. All schools were closed by the end of the Third Bimestrial of 1989 and a very large vacation started, as a consequence of the insecurity that people felt before the Operation Just Cause of the US in Panama.
In spite of those incidents, I had enough time for my favorite hobbies, reading, writing and drawing, so I finished my story.
- What motivate you to write when you were a little girl in those years?
Probably, I was motivated by the complicated incidents I saw, moreover I wanted to create other tales different from the old fables and fairy tales. I decided to make something new and I chose as my characters my favorite animals: cats, rabbits and horses, and I added fantasy characters as unicorns, griffins, dragons, fairies and extraterrestrials.
- What does your novel tell about?
It’s a Fantasy novel with romance, adventure, humor and mystery. It tells the wonderful adventures of Aldo, the unicorn and his friends. Young Aldo becomes king of Horsetown thanks to the help of the fairies, despite the strong opposition of the lions, the cruel dynasty ruler of the Enchanted Forest.
Aldo represents leadership, good feelings, optimism and many other values. The villain is Armand II the Troublemaker, the king of all lions, which represents cruelty, hate and envy. The novel emphasizes in family, friendship, honor, loyalty, respect and moral values.
-Will it have a second part of “Aldo, the young king”?
Yes, it will have a second novel. Thanks to the acceptance of children and adults, it will have a continuation for this tale. The second novel is actually under revision by the editor and we hope publish it for next year. There will be more adventures of Aldo and the other characters. New funny characters will be introduced, too.
- Which are your favorite books and authors?
When I was a child, I liked Rudyard Kipling’s short stories about talking animals. I was fascinated by Alice in Wonderland of Lewis Carroll and I like Heidi, of Joanne Spiry. From Panamanian authors, I like reading Chiquilinga, a Children’s Theater by Rogelio Sinan.
Grown up, I prefer the following authors:
1. Paulo Coelho, who wrote my favorite book, The Alchemist.
2. J.K. Rowling, and her series about Harry.
3. J.R.R. Tolkien, author of the Lord of the Rings.
4. C.S. Lewis and his Chronicles of Narnia.

Acerca de los personajes...
* ¿Quién tiene más poderes mágicos, Aldo o las hadas?
Las hadas, por supuesto, y entre ellas, una de las más poderosas es la Reina de las Hadas del Bosque Encantado. En la segunda novela conoceremos un poco más acerca de ellas.
* ¿Hay animales que hablan en otras tierras aparte del Bosque Encantado?
Sí, los hay. A lo largo de mis historias los van a ir apareciendo. Varios de ellos llegarán de visita al Bosque Encantado y conocerán a Aldo, su familia y amigos.
* ¿Cómo son los reyes de Animalandia, Gatolandia y Sapolandia?
El rey de Animalandia es un rinoceronte, el de Gatolandia es un gato y el de Sapolandia es un sapo. Todos ellos son amigos de Aldo. Cada nación tiene también un Presidente y junto a ellos se reúnen para tratar asuntos relacionados con el Bosque Encantado y sus habitantes. Armalíos también tiene que asistir a esas reuniones. En una próxima novela hablaré más sobre este tema.
* ¿Si Narvy y Amy son buenos, entonces por qué ocasionaron el oleaje que destruyó el Palacio y las casas de los leones?
Los narvales son buenos, pero como nadie es perfecto en esta historia, ellos también cometen errores. Podemos decir que éste fue el gran error: tomar la justicia de cuenta propia, tal como se hacía hace cientos de años, cuando eran unicornios y vivían en el Bosque Encantado.
* ¿Narvy tiene un reino bajo el Mar Encantado? ¿Escribirá acerca de éste en una próxima novela?
Sí, Narvy tiene un gran reino en el Mar Encantado. Me gustaría escribir más acerca de él algún día, pero por ahora debemos concentrar nuestra atención en Aldo, ya que es el personaje principal de esta historia.
* ¿Qué son los narvales? ¿Existen realmente?
Los narvales existen realmente. Son cetáceos, mamíferos marinos, como los delfines y las ballenas. Viven en el Mar Artico y sus alrededores, en grupos de 20 individuos. Los narvales miden entre 3.5 y 5 metros de longitud. El narval macho posee un enorme colmillo que sale de su boca y mide unos 3 metros de largo, el cual utiliza para pelear con otros machos y para abrir agujeros en el hielo.
Aún se conservan en museos de Europa, colmillos de narvales hábilmente tallados. Durante la Edad Media, como la mayoría de la gente desconocía su verdadera procedencia, empezaron a creer que éstos eran cuernos de unicornios que habían sido cazados en tierras lejanas y les atribuían propiedades medicinales. * ¿Los nombres de Amy y Narvy vienen de Army y Navy?
Es casi una coincidencia lo de los nombres ¡Qué curioso esto! Pero no, los nombres de los narvales no tienen nada que ver con la Armada y la Marina del Ejército de Estados Unidos. El nombre de Narvy ha sido tomado de la palabra narval, tan simple como eso. JAmy, en cambio, lo tomé de la novela Mujercitas, ya que me gustó mucho, sin embargo, este personaje no se parece en nada al mío.
* ¿Podría explicarnos el origen de algunos de los nombres de los personajes de “Aldo, el Joven Rey”?
Algunos nombres fueron inventados por mí, mientras que otros fueron tomados de lo que yo leía, como por ejemplo Ronda, que realmente se escribe Rhonda, pero yo lo alteré a propósito. Se dice que los nombres no siempre siguen las reglas ortográficas. También hay muchos nombres comunes en español e inglés, como habrán podido notar. J De seguro que entre ustedes, los lectores, habrá varios Aldo, Luis, Ana, Katia o Miguel.

- Who is more powerful in magic, Aldo or the fairies?
Fairies are most powerful, of course. Between them, the Queen of the Fairies of the Enchanted Forest is one of the most powerful in magic. In the second novel, you will know more about them.
- Are there any talking animals in other lands far away of the Enchanted Forest?
Yes, there are many talking animals in other lands. In next novels you will know some of them.
- How are the kings of Animaland, Catland and Toadland?
Animaland’s king is a rhinoceros, Catland’s king is a cat and Toadland’s king is a green toad. All of them are Aldo’s friends. Every year, they have a meeting in any of the cities of the Enchanted Forest. Armand II the Troublemaker has to go to these meetings, too, because he is the Lions’ Colony king and it’s his duty.
- If Narvy and Amy were good, why did they cause the destruction of the Lions’ Palace and houses?
They are good, but nobody is perfect. L They can make mistakes and this one was the worst: they took the justice in their hands, as they used to do many years ago when they were unicorns and lived in the Enchanted Forest.
- Does Narvy have a kingdom under the Enchanted Sea? Will you write about it in a next novel?
Yes, Narvy has a huge kingdom under the Enchanted Sea. I would like to write about him someday, but Aldo, our main character, is more important by now.
- What are the narwhals? Do they really exist?
Yes, they really exist. They are cetaceans like dolphins and whales. They live in the Arctic Ocean, in groups of 20. Males have an enormous tooth (3 m – 9.84 ft long) that they use to fight and open holes in the ice for breathe.
In some European museums, there are showed these gently carved teeth. In Middle Age, most of the people didn’t know where did they came, so they began to think that those teeth were unicorns’ horns, mythical animals that a legend told they lived in far lands.

- What did you take Amy and Narvy’s names from? Did you take them from the words Army and Navy?
J Is it curious, isn’t it? It’s almost a coincidence! But no, I didn’t take their names from the U.S. Army and Navy. The name of Narvy came from the Spanish word narval that means narwhal. I took the name of Amy in honor of a character of the classic novel “Little Women”, because I liked reading it.
Some names were changed or invented and others were taken from magazines or books I had read when I was a child.
